(not set) attribution issue

Concept

A problem where sessions or events in GA4 reports show '(not set)' or 'Unassigned' source/medium because attribution data is missing. Duga traces one cause to events being split across different session IDs.

Relations

Evidence

“GS2.1.s1750086044$o1$g0$t1750086046$j60$l0$h1050744214 The top one is the server-side session. The bottom one is the client-side session. This means the page_view and user_engagement events have been assigned to different sessions. With fv and ss in the pageview session, the user_engagement event has no attribution data attached to it – this causes the dreaded (not set).”

“The diagnosis methodology is a useful takeaway. Consider which events are associated with your (not set) rows, reproduce the journey, and carefully observe the hit payloads – especially session ID values.”

A/B testing

Concept · sameAs

Experimentation that depends on correctly tracked conversion KPIs, achievable statistical significance and trustworthy results. Duga says poor data infrastructure undermines it.

Relations

Evidence

“Or AB testing teams are trying to ensure their Conversion KPI’s are tracking correctly, statistical significance is possible or they can trust the results of the A/B test. Poor data infrastructure, disconnected platforms and poor reporting all lead to these challenges leaving marketers frustrating and unable to deliver against the conversion KPIs they are targeted against.”

Ad blockers

Concept · Also known as: Ad blocker data loss

Browser tools that block tracking, contributing to signal loss alongside ITP and consent banners. They degrade the Meta and Google data reaching reporting and bidding, and in one case the brand lost more than half its conversion signal despite a Google-funded ad stack.

Relations

Evidence

“The challenge What wasn’t working A high-end fine jewellery brand was losing more than half of its conversion signal to ad blockers and ITP, despite running a Google-funded ad stack at scale. The paid team could see the spend going out and the customers walking in, but couldn’t connect the two.”

Analytics calibration

ProprietaryTerm · General term: Analytics calibration testing

A testing phase after tag unit testing, where a known input is matched to the desired output, such as an organic search visit followed by five page views appearing accurately in reports. Duga Digital automates it so it runs in minutes at almost no cost.

Evidence

“With unit testing tags out of the way, the testing enters a different phase – calibration. When we calibrate the analytics, we match the desired output to the known input. If a user enters the site from an organic search, and clicks through 5 pages, you’d expect to see this represented accurately in the reports.”

But there’s a problem with some tags. GA tags can be calibrated like this but Google Ads, Meta, TikTok, Pinterest, Snap, pretty much any paid advertising platform you care to mention doesn’t lend itself to calibration.”

Artificial intelligence

Concept · sameAs

Presented as an amplifier rather than a shortcut: it does not replace analytics but exposes weak analytics and makes mistakes at scale, and its value depends on structure, data quality and human judgement. The publisher also notes it as the dominant summit topic, with strong interest but nascent understanding, and questions whether AI agents will reduce the need for human consultancy.

Relations

Evidence

“AI Of course – AI was a big topic. I think there might have been a bingo moment (AI mentioned) in almost all of the talks I attended. Some things struck me though: - Not enough fear – everyone seemed very positive about the AI helping complete tasks rather than act as a threat to employment or role existence.”

Attribution

Concept · Also known as: Attribution modelling · sameAs

The measurement of which marketing activity deserves credit for conversions and other outcomes, which Duga contrasts with last-click reporting. The publisher describes it as difficult because of spam, bots and AI agents, and argues that accurate, scaled 1-to-1 attribution is not possible in a privacy-first way.

Relations

Evidence

“It is still remarkable that attribution remains as difficult as it is. The problem is not getting simpler. More spam, more bots, and more bad actors are making it harder. The emergence of AI agents adds another layer of complexity too: not all automated traffic is unwanted, and understanding what agents are doing in your ecosystem is going to become increasingly important to measure and account for.”

H1 Google Analytics Roadmap inside track - published by Duga Digital

“In a case of this-is-not-really-news, attribution is hard. No, that’s not a shock, and nor is the reality that attribution is only going to get harder unless you change your game. Fundamentally, accurate and scaled 1-to-1 marketing and attribution is not possible in a privacy first manner. Regulation and technology are both growing challenges that prevent reliable id resolution for mass volume individualised marketing. Even with AI!”

Attribution gap

ProprietaryTerm · General term: Online-to-offline attribution gap

“The result is a Google Ads account that is optimising towards the wrong signal. It is rewarding campaigns that generate enquiries, not campaigns that generate revenue. Automated server-side migration

ProprietaryTerm · General term: Server-side migration

Duga's scripted process for migrating a client-side Google Tag Manager container to a server-side setup. It cleans the container, creates the server-side property and container, migrates tags, triggers and variables, and logs each step, with manual or automatic deployment.

Relations

Evidence

“What does it do exactly? This is a more detailed description of what happens in an automated server-side migration. A typical migration will handle GA4 tags, Google Ads, Conversion Linker setup, best practice housekeeping, cleaning up a container, Facebook CAPI, LinkedIn, TikTok tags, triggers, variables, user defined, and enabling/disabling built in variables – it does the lot.”

Duga Does Server-Side Part 1 - published by Duga Digital

“With the client side container in good order, we can now copy the GA4 tags to be server-side versions. Here we’re not doing a parallel migration so the old client-side tags are deleted. Having done the GA4 tags, that’s the easy part. Now we’ll do the GMP tags and get on to the custom template tags.”

Duga Does Server-Side Part 1 - published by Duga Digital

“That’s all well and good, but what value has been delivered to the business here? We’ve made server-side migration quite boring – and that’s a good thing. That’s how it should be so we can get on with much more valuable and exciting activation projects that deliver value on the data rather than treating server-side as a badge of honour and data as a treasured ornament.”

Concept · Also known as: gcs

Relations

Evidence

Cloud Run

SoftwareProduct

The Google Cloud container environment in which server-side GTM tags run. Instances recycle and autoscale, so alert state is kept outside runtime storage.

Evidence

“Server-side Google Tag Manager (sGTM) solves a lot of data collection challenges, but it also creates a new blind spot: once a tag runs inside a Cloud Run container instead of a browser, you lose the easy visibility a browser console and the network tab used to give you. Tags fail quietly. Volumes drift without anyone noticing. A container that looked healthy yesterday can be silently broken today, and the first sign is often a client asking why last week’s numbers look wrong – more on this scenario anon from real world experiences…”

We Built the Data Collection Logger We Wished Existed - published by Duga Digital

“State for all of this lives in Firestore rather than in the tag’s own runtime storage, because that storage is scoped to a single server process instance and gets wiped whenever Cloud Run recycles or autoscales, which happens more often than you would expect under real traffic. Firestore transactions give an atomic, cross-instance counter instead. Alerting can also never break event logging: the BigQuery insert always runs first and unconditionally, before the alerting function is even called, so a Slack or Firestore problem never costs you the underlying data.”

Cloud Run functions

SoftwareProduct

Google Cloud serverless functions used by the publisher for BigQuery workloads, Slack webhook messages and logging delivery times. “I’d much rather analyze this in BigQuery itself. This “itch” was the perfect excuse to build a proper tracking system. From Slack Noise to BQ Gold We already had the foundation in place. Google's mechanism for passing user consent signals to tags, sometimes abbreviated CoMo. Data Strength

ProprietaryTerm · Also known as: Google Data Strength · General term: Data strength

Duga's term for how well an organisation's data meets the bar Google AI needs to maximise ROI, positioned as a foundational measurement KPI for 2026 and a response to accelerating signal loss. It has four dimensions: Volume, Quality, Durability and Maturity. The publisher links it to Google's programme encouraging robust, compliant data collection, in which user-provided data is a large part.

Relations

Evidence

“Expect serious investment in data strength Data strength is a measure of how well your data meets the bar Google AI needs to genuinely maximise your ROI. It is not a soft metric. It is the foundation everything else is built on.”

H1 Google Analytics Roadmap inside track - published by Duga Digital

“We have started referring to the response to this problem as Data Strength, and we believe it is the single most important measurement KPI for 2026. It has four dimensions: - Volume: the percentage of possible signal you are collecting. Red flag: offline events that never make it back into the model.”

Device fingerprinting

Concept

A tracking technique that reads device characteristics, such as screen dimensions, to follow users around the web for advertising purposes. It circumvents consent.

Evidence

“ATFP offers a lot of great protection for the user from device fingerprinting – an insidious tracking technique that circumvents consent in order to literally chase you around the web for advertising gains.”

When Safari breaks The Internet - published by Duga Digital

“So, known fingerprinting scripts aren’t allowed to access device characteristics such as screen dimensions, that can be used in shifty tracking schemes but there’s more”…. “And lastly, Safari prevents known fingerprinting scripts from reading state that could be used for navigational tracking, such as query parameters and document.referrer.””

Duga 5-layer stack

ProprietaryTerm · Also known as: Duga tech stack · General term: Standard technical measurement stack

The standard five-layer technical stack used in every Duga Digital build, composed for the client's business rather than assembled from scratch. It consists of server-side GTM, Addingwell for sGTM infrastructure, Didomi for consent, GA4 with BigQuery, and an in-house library of technical assets that automate repeatable data operations. It is intended to keep measurement resilient to browser and platform changes and to give consistent audits, documentation and handover.

Relations

Evidence

“Opinionated engineering, not a tool list. Every Duga build uses the same 5-layer stack, composed for your business, not assembled from scratch. The result is measurement that survives the next browser update, the next platform change, and the next agency review.”

Technical Framework - published by Duga Digital

“The Duga approach Our tech stack is Google-aligned by design. We operate with server-side GTM, we use Addingwell for sGTM infrastructure, we have Didomi handling consent, and we run our own library of technical assets that automate the repeatable parts of data operations. Duga Logger

SoftwareProduct

A server-side GTM logger built by Duga Digital that writes one flat row per event to a date-partitioned BigQuery table. It adds real-time Slack alerting, cumulative metrics and data quality checks, with thresholds configurable per client or container.

Relations

Evidence

“For sure, there are already good sGTM loggers out there. Addingwell and Stape both deploy well-regarded templates, and we used both as a starting point. But neither one, on its own, gave us everything we wanted, so we built our own: the Duga Logger.”

We Built the Data Collection Logger We Wished Existed - published by Duga Digital

“If a client’s compliance posture calls for Addingwell’s approach instead, that is a configuration decision worth making explicitly, not an oversight. Per-event and per-tag monitoring The core of the logger is simple: every event gets one flat row in a date-partitioned BigQuery table, and every named tag gets its own execution result recorded inside that row.”

We Built the Data Collection Logger We Wished Existed - published by Duga Digital

“One framework, built to grow Every threshold in the logger is a template field, not a hard-coded number. Alert thresholds, plateau minutes, the spike multiplier, and the minimum spike count are all tuned per client, or per container, without touching code. Any tag can be named and opted in, or excluded, at any time, with no redeploy needed. The same JSON columns that make the schema flat also mean new event parameters or new tags never require a schema migration.”

Enhanced conversions

Concept

Google's approach to sending user-provided data to Google Ads so that conversions can be matched back to ad clicks, improving conversion measurement. It can be set up client side or server side, and it does not work without consent.

Relations

Evidence

“Benefits There are many success stories from implementing Enhanced Conversions (Google’s name for sending UPD to Google Ads). One of Google’s clients in Asos experienced improved return on ad spend (ROAS) with a recorded sales uplift of 8.6% in Search and 31% in YouTube. Improvements like these can be seen on the Conversions diagnosis in Google Ads, where you can start analysing its effect:”

“What an interesting time to be doing this Here is the thing: The tools to fix this problem now exist. Properly. In a way they genuinely did not five years ago. Google’s Data Manager API, and the broader enhanced conversions framework that sits around it, allows businesses to take offline conversion data, match it back to the original ad click, and feed it into Google Ads in a way that the Smart Bidding algorithms can actually use.”

Your marketing tech stack has evolved, have you? - published by Duga Digital

“In the UK, which follows the UK GDPR, even hashed PII is considered personal data, which means that you need to ask for consent to collect it. Google Consent Mode (GMC), will dictate how, and if, UPD is used. In a more technical term, the ad_user_data signal is the signal in charge of allowing Google platform to receive and use UPD. This means that no consent means no Enhanced Conversions. It’s as simple as that.”

Event deduplication

Concept

Matching web and backend events using deduplication keys so that each conversion is counted once. Inconsistent deduplication was one of the causes of the reporting gap.

Evidence

“Client-side tags were being blocked by browsers and consent tools, deduplication between web and backend events was inconsistent, and the warehouse was missing the join keys needed to validate any of it. Bid algorithms were starving and the marketing team had no auditable answer for the finance director.”

Firestore

SoftwareProduct · sameAs

Google's document database on Google Cloud, used by the publisher as a strongly-consistent store. Uses include idempotency claim records, alerting state kept outside tag runtime storage, session attribution records keyed to client ID or hashed email with a time-to-live, and BigQuery-derived profit data for server-side variable lookups. Its transactions provide an atomic cross-instance counter, and data must be swept or expired.

Relations

Evidence

“State for all of this lives in Firestore rather than in the tag’s own runtime storage, because that storage is scoped to a single server process instance and gets wiped whenever Cloud Run recycles or autoscales, which happens more often than you would expect under real traffic. Firestore transactions give an atomic, cross-instance counter instead. Alerting can also never break event logging: the BigQuery insert always runs first and unconditionally, before the alerting function is even called, so a Slack or Firestore problem never costs you the underlying data.”

We Built the Data Collection Logger We Wished Existed - published by Duga Digital

“Solution For the Cloud Run Function, we’ve used Firestore to maintain a record of logical events. But a non-atomic read-check-act solution isn’t robust. This doesn’t solve the race. More appropriately, we maintain a claim record per logical event in Firestore, keyed by a stable idempotency key.”

First-party data

Concept · Also known as: 1PD

Data collected directly by the business, described as its primary asset and essential ingredient, with collection spanning online and offline and real-time and asynchronous sources. It should be enabled intentionally rather than left to default settings. It also covers serving scripts and collecting data from the same origin using paths such as /scripts and /metrics, framed as ownership of the data stream.

Relations

Evidence

“If you are not already treating first-party data as your primary asset, now is the time to change that. Think online and offline. Think real-time and asynchronous. Data collection is not a single-channel discipline any more.”

GA4 BigQuery export delivery time tracker

ProprietaryTerm · Also known as: bg_drop time · General term: BigQuery export monitoring

A tracking system built by Duga Digital that logs when the daily GA4 export lands in BigQuery. A Cloud Run Function sends the usual Slack message and inserts a row into a bq_delivery_logs table, so delivery times can be graphed. The author uses it to track delivery time across the 360 and Standard datasets and to see whether the curves are flattening or speeding up.

“The Recommended Schema, Briefly GA4’s ecommerce events aren’t arbitrary. Each one maps to a stage of the shopping journey, and each one expects a specific, documented set of parameters: - view_item_list, select_item: browsing and list interactions”

GA4 Ecommerce: Stop Building What Google Already Gives You - published by Duga Digital

“None of this is a suggestion in the “nice to have” sense. GA4’s standard reports are quite literally built to read these exact event and parameter names. Rename add_to_cart to addToBasket, or send item_name as a flat event parameter instead of inside the items array, and the reports that were meant to populate automatically simply stay blank. You haven’t broken GA4. You’ve just built tracking it doesn’t recognise.”

“The Takeaway Before building a custom event, a custom dimension, or a bespoke report for something ecommerce-shaped, it’s worth five minutes checking whether Google’s recommended schema already covers it. More often than not, it does, and building around it instead of adopting it just means more work for you and a smaller set of reports for everyone using GA4 downstream.”

GDPR

Regulation · Also known as: General Data Protection Regulation · sameAs

The data protection regulation introduced in May 2018 that sets out how to collect, withdraw and document user consent, and which the ICO enforces in the UK. Duga's server-side rebuild is designed to comply with it, and consent handling is central to the work.

Evidence

“The GDPR was introduced on May of 2018. Since then, in the UK, the ICO has been responsible for enforcing it. For years now there has been a regulation in place stating how to collect, withdraw, and document data in regards to user consent. Google Consent Mode was launched in 2020, with v2 available from 2023. Idempotency in data pipelines

Concept · Also known as: Idempotency key

A design pattern that ensures an event-driven workload performs its side effects at most once per logical event, even when delivery is only guaranteed at least once. It depends on choosing the identifier that defines the same logical event, with consumers keying on the delivery id and producers on the business event. One implementation keeps a claim record per event in Firestore, keyed by a stable idempotency key, and runs a state machine (in_progress, completed, failed) in a transaction so only one concurrent delivery does the work.

Relations

Evidence

“Idempotency in data pipelines The goal is to guarantee that an event-driven workload (Cloud Run Function or custom tag) performs its side effects at most once per logical event, even though the delivery substrate (Pub/Sub, GTM events) only guarantees at-least-once delivery and may invoke the function multiple times for the same message.”

Understanding Idempotency in Data Pipelines with Firestore - published by Duga Digital

“The idempotency key: the one decision that matters The key defines what “the same logical event” means. Choosing it wrong silently defeats the entire pattern. The correct source depends on which side of the queue you are on:”

Understanding Idempotency in Data Pipelines with Firestore - published by Duga Digital

Understanding Idempotency in Data Pipelines with Firestore - published by Duga Digital

“The handler runs a small state machine over that record: Failed claim record: Success claim record: There are two critical load-bearing ideas in play here: The claim is a Firestore transaction, not a plain read followed by a write.”

Understanding Idempotency in Data Pipelines with Firestore - published by Duga Digital

“Consumer side: key on the delivery id A Pub/Sub message carries a server-assigned messageId that is stable across redeliveries of that message. For a consumer, that is exactly the right key: “process this delivered message at most once”. We typically use pubsub_message[“messageId”] as the Firestore document ID.”

Initiator event parameter

ProprietaryTerm · Also known as: initiator parameter · General term: Event source parameter

A custom event parameter added to GTM tags, and as a server-side value, to show which system generated a GA4 event and which GTM version was used. It lets you distinguish your own tags from enhanced measurement events and separate old data from new.

“Then you see events with the initiator payload – they’re your tags, enhanced measurement doesn’t get its hands on your tag settings: On the server side, we add a server side initiator value: The case for custom events configured in GA4 requires another approach. When setting up the custom event, you can further modify the event parameters but it is limited.”

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

Concept · Also known as: ITP · sameAs

Last-click attribution

Concept

An attribution approach that credits the final click before a conversion. Duga contrasts it with causal impact measurement of real uplift.

Evidence

“Your GA4 is lying to you. You just can’t prove it. After the UA-to-GA4 migration, direct traffic ate the credit and your real channels look flat. We rebuild the measurement, find the lost signal, and prove the real incremental uplift with causal impact modelling. Not last-click.”

Measurement ID

Concept · Also known as: GA4 Measurement ID

The identifier used by GA4 tags and events, acting as both the unique identifier of a GA4 data stream and the destination ID that routes collected data to the correct property. Duga notes its use is harder than it should be, as multiple measurement IDs are not supported, and recommends a genuine ID from an owned property as a routing key rather than a placeholder such as G-12345.

Relations

Evidence

“Confirmed: TWO TAG IDS. Below this, you’ll see “Destinations”: Notice the Destination ID is the Stream Measurement ID. The Measurement ID acts as both the unique identifier for the data stream and the destination ID ensuring data collected by the tag is routed to the correct GA4 property.”

Tag ID, Measurement ID, Destination ID - published by Duga Digital

“Measurement ID is the right lever but G-12345 is the wrong value The typical accepted measurement ID today is G-12345. Using measurement ID with a genuine value has advantages over another lever, or a place holder value. Setting a measurement ID is part of the client side setup. Different events will be used for different destinations and activations.”

Automatic gtag – what does it mean for you? - published by Duga Digital

“The gtag has a Tag ID. Here’s a GA4 Event: The GA4 tag has a Measurement ID. A GA4 data stream has a Measurement ID, And they appear to be the same value: But a Tag ID can be different to a measurement ID, and you can’t use a Tag ID in a GA4 Event, you have to use a measurement ID.”

Tag ID, Measurement ID, Destination ID - published by Duga Digital

“- Placeholders survive. A test ID in an allow-list at the highest priority in the container is the kind of thing that gets published and then forgotten. Recommendation: replace G-12345 with a real measurement ID from a real GA4 property that you own and that is deliberately designated for this route, either a dedicated test or staging property, or the genuine second-destination property this pattern is ultimately for.”

You can now “send any event to both your Google Analytics web and app data streams, provided they’re not reserved events.” Google positions the Data Manager API as “an alternative to Measurement Protocol for sending recommended and custom events directly to Google Analytics.” The unified schema covers app instance ID, event location and mobile device information, with routing determined by your Firebase App ID or Measurement ID.”

Measurement-ID-Aware Client Routing

ProprietaryTerm · General term: Measurement ID-based request routing

A server-side GTM pattern in which a custom client claims incoming requests based on the GA4 measurement ID, so the ID acts as a routing key. The client that claims a request determines which tags fire, which destinations receive data and what enrichment or redaction applies.

Relations

Evidence

“Therefore, triggering tags, and transformations based on the client name is not ideal. Solution The pattern being built here replaces that with a custom client that claims requests based on the measurement ID sent by the client side GA4 tag.”

Measurement-ID-Aware Client Routing in Server-Side GTM - published by Duga Digital

“Because a claimed request is stamped with the name of the client that claimed it, and because triggers can filter on Client Name, the measurement ID effectively becomes a routing key. One stream of client-side collection arrives at the server; which tags fire, which destinations receive data, and what enrichment or redaction is applied are all decided by which client won the claim.”

Measurement-ID-Aware Client Routing in Server-Side GTM - published by Duga Digital

“Why this matters: the real applications Once measurement ID is a routing key, several things become possible that are awkward or impossible with a single stock client. Destination control and divergence. Genuine client-side collection can be diverted to different destinations per measurement ID. One site, one gtag deployment, but hits tagged with different IDs land in different GA4 properties, different ad platforms, or different warehouses, decided server-side and changeable without a site release.”

Meta Conversions API

SoftwareProduct

Meta's server-side conversions interface, also called Facebook CAPI. It is one of the tag types handled in a server-side migration, alongside LinkedIn and TikTok tags.

Offline conversion tracking

Concept · Also known as: Offline conversion import

The practice of sending revenue events that happen outside the browser, such as in a CRM, point of sale or CDP, or boutique visits and consultations, back to ad platforms with proper attribution. It lets platforms like Google Ads optimise bidding on real sales rather than form fills. It requires Click ID capture, defined and timestamped events and a consented data flow, for example via Data Manager API, server-side GTM and Firestore.

Relations

Evidence

“That is the engagement. We translate the commercial problem into a technical specification, and then we build the thing that connects the two. In the case of offline conversion tracking via the Data Manager API, that specification typically involves several moving parts. The CRM needs to be instrumented to gather Google Click IDs at the point of enquiry. The conversion events, the actual revenue moments, need to be defined and timestamped.”

Pre-production tagging validation harness

ProprietaryTerm · General term: Pre-production tag testing

Duga's approach of running the real production site through a controlled test harness that loads a test tagging configuration. Data goes to an isolated sandbox tagging server and a throwaway analytics property, and a genuine conversion journey is followed end to end without touching production.

Relations

Evidence

“Put plainly: test the real journey, prove the attribution holds end to end, and leave production completely untouched. The Duga approach This is the gap we close. We run the real production site through a controlled test harness that loads our test tagging configuration instead of the site’s live one, routes the resulting data to an isolated sandbox tagging server and a throwaway analytics property, and then follows a genuine conversion journey from first visit through to subscription or purchase.”

“Crucially, the test configuration sits on a first-party footing, so cookies, attribution and the server-side data flow behave precisely as they would in production. We can watch the whole chain in real time: the container loading, the events firing, the cookies being set correctly, and the conversion arriving with its attribution intact. Nothing we do alters the production tags, the production data or the site’s infrastructure. Every change lives in a controlled environment we own and tear down afterwards.”

Preview Mode filtering

Methodology · Also known as: traffic_type

An approach for keeping preview and debug traffic out of production reporting. Events from containers in preview mode are tagged with traffic_type = dev and excluded with an internal traffic data filter, with client-side and server-side variants. A trickier variant handles cases where either the server or client container may be in preview mode, using a server-side GTM transformation activated by chained Lookup variables.

Relations

Evidence

“Client side first. Client Side Preview Mode Filtering - Click Create - Set the parameter to container_version. - You’ll need to send container_id and container_version as event parameters.”

Profit-based reporting and optimisation

Concept

Using profit data instead of, or alongside, revenue in analytics reporting and Google Ads conversion values. Duga sets out four options: full replacement, custom metrics, parallel measurement and partner measurement.

Evidence

“With Google Ads, the choice to send the profit metric as a conversion value is straightforward but with analytics, there are options. #1 Full Replacement You can fully replace revenue with profit, and item values with cost of goods data Replace shipping with margin and adjust your tax field accordingly. Pub/Sub

SoftwareProduct · Also known as: Google Cloud Pub/Sub · sameAs

Google Cloud's messaging service, used to exchange messages between servers, integrate sGTM with other systems and power automation, retries and fault tolerance. It receives messages pushed by Eventarc triggers and in turn triggers Cloud Run functions. It guarantees at-least-once delivery, so messages may be redelivered and handlers must cope with duplicates.

Evidence

“No data set value is maximised if it remains in isolation. You can integrate your data sets by a method of message exchange between servers. And a great way to tackle inter-server communication is with Pub/Sub. This is highly performant and scalable. Let’s explore.”

“I’d much rather analyze this in BigQuery itself. This “itch” was the perfect excuse to build a proper tracking system. From Slack Noise to BQ Gold We already had the foundation in place. “The completion (success or failure), of the container publication is recorded in Pub/Sub. Consider how automation reporting, retries, and fault tolerance is powered by the message bus. Moving tag execution from the browser to server infrastructure, so that measurement survives ad blockers and consent restrictions. Duga Digital uses it in rebuild work, often with a consent rebuild, to restore signal lost to Google and Meta, and offers it with transparent server pricing.

Relations

Evidence

“When you first heard the term “server side tagging”, did your mind conjure up a vision of no tags in the browser and the web server squirting data straight into Google Analytics? Yes? The more typical server side data collection architecture is actually closer to a proxy server. The browser sends data to your server first, before your tags on your server send data to Goole, Meta, Pinterest, Tik Tok, and so on.”

Superweek 2026 – Day Two - published by Duga Digital

“If this event was scaled to the size of the digital industry then over 50% of website traffic would be measured using server-side tagging techniques. It isn’t, and hasn’t. But it was very interesting to me to note that sponsors, agencies, hosts and even a few interested vendors were doing presentations on the topic. Perhaps in Germany there is about to be a big wave of new server-side implementations (or there has been recently – none of the presentations I saw showed a real-life case study, mostly theory).”

Server-side tagging implementation

Service · Also known as: Server-side setups

Duga's service of building and rebuilding server-side measurement, including server-side mirrors and setups, so that Google, Meta and other platforms receive a clean, consented signal despite ad blockers, ITP and consent banners. The stated aims are better bid quality, lower CPA, reduced waste, higher match rates and trusted data for acquisition teams. One example is 25 country and brand websites using a single server-side container for all analytics tracking.

“I feel like the year has flown past because we’ve been in constant delivery mode. A few highlights. After all, real progress is built one solved problem at a time. Server side tagging remains our biggest advantage and has delivered the biggest changes for brands. Not theoretical pilots.”

Session ID

Concept

The sid value in a Google Analytics hit payload that identifies the session. When the page_view and user_engagement events carry different values, sessions break and attribution is lost.

Relations

Evidence

sGTM preview mode

Concept · Also known as: X-Gtm-Server-Preview

The debugging view for a server container, where requests appear on a timeline only if they carry the preview cookie or the X-Gtm-Server-Preview header. When sGTM is proxied, for example behind a Google Tag Gateway, browsers protect cookies across subdomains and preview can stay silent even though hits succeed. The fix is to have the Worker inject the X-Gtm-Server-Preview header, taking the preview ID from the request or Referer and removing gtm_preview parameters from the URL.

Relations

Evidence

“Server side preview is structured differently. When you open the Preview panel for your server container, a first-party cookie is set on your sGTM subdomain (for example sgtm.example.com). A request will show up on the timeline if it either carries that cookie or carries an HTTP header: X-Gtm-Server-Preview. The cookie route only works when the browser sends its request straight to the sGTM subdomain. The header route works from anywhere, which is the escape hatch we will need shortly.”

Debugging sGTM Preview Mode in a Google Tag Gateway World - published by Duga Digital

“When proxying sGTM through a Cloudflare Worker, the biggest hurdle isn’t the data, it’s the authorisation. Because browsers protect cookies across subdomains, your preview mode stays silent even when hits are successful.”

Google Tag Gateway – CDN & sGTM - published by Duga Digital

“The trick is to get the preview ID into X-Gtm-Server-Preview before the Worker forwards the request. Simo Ahava’s Tip 132 has the shape of the solution: grab the preview ID attached by the client side container (either as gtm_preview on the query string or embedded in the Referer) and translate it into a proper header.”

Debugging sGTM Preview Mode in a Google Tag Gateway World - published by Duga Digital

“Here is the catch. The preview cookie lives on sgtm.dugadigital.com, but in a Tag Gateway setup the browser never sends requests to that origin. It sends them to dugadigital.com/duganalytics/…, and the browser has no reason to attach a sgtm.dugadigital.com cookie to a request for a different origin.”

Debugging sGTM Preview Mode in a Google Tag Gateway World - published by Duga Digital

“Solution We need to use Tip 132 from the Simo Ahava blog – we add the X-Gtm-Server-Preview header in the Cloudflare worker. Grab the value from the server side preview: Add it to the client side preview mode:”

Signal loss

Concept

The loss or thinning of measurement data between ad click and recorded conversion, creating gaps between what the browser, backend and ad platforms see. Causes include third-party cookie decline, ITP, ad blockers, consent gating, regulation, inconsistent deduplication and gclid attrition. Platforms such as Google and Meta cannot bid towards sales they cannot see.

Evidence

“Every measurement team I talk to has the same problem. Signal loss is accelerating. Third-party cookies, browser intelligent tracking prevention, ad blockers, regulation, consent gating and the natural attrition of gclid between ad click and offline conversion all conspire to thin out the picture you are trying to draw.”

Smart Bidding

Concept

Google Ads' automated bidding algorithms, which learn from the conversion data they receive. Trained on form fills they optimise towards the wrong signal, whereas actual revenue events change their optimisation decisions.

Relations

Evidence

“The consequences compound over time. Smart bidding strategies learn from the wrong data. Budget allocation decisions are made on the basis of cost per lead, when the actual question is cost per pound of revenue. Campaigns that look inefficient by one measure are quietly the most profitable. Campaigns that look exceptional are producing enquiries that go nowhere.”

Your marketing tech stack has evolved, have you? - published by Duga Digital

“Not as a reporting metric. As a training signal. This is a meaningful shift. When Google’s bidding engine is learning from actual revenue events rather than form fills, the optimisation decisions it makes are categorically different.
